Atmosphere beats raw graphics on a small screen

Atmosphere beats raw graphics on a small screen

June 11, 2026 · Marta Kovács

You don't need photorealistic visuals to make a memorable mobile game. On a five-inch screen, atmosphere matters far more than polygon counts, and Hollow Lantern proves it.

So much of that game's impact comes from sound. The creak of floorboards, distant wind, the way silence stretches before something happens — with headphones on, it's genuinely tense despite modest art. Good audio design is criminally underrated on mobile.

Mood is built from pacing too. Hollow Lantern isn't afraid to let you walk slowly, to leave a room quiet. A lot of games would fill that space with action. The confidence to hold back is what makes it linger.

If you're a developer reading this: invest in sound. A cheap engine with brilliant audio will beat a gorgeous one with tinny effects every single time on a phone.
