Turn-based RPGs still work best on phones
There's a reason turn-based RPGs never really left mobile. Unlike action games that demand your full attention, a turn-based fight waits for you. You can think, get interrupted, put the phone down, and come back — the game hasn't moved without you.
Playing Emberfall Saga reminded me of this. I'd get through a battle waiting for coffee, then another on the tram home. The stakes stay high but the format fits real life. Good ones save between fights so you never lose progress to a closed app.
If you're new to the genre, start with something that has a readable UI and a forgiving difficulty curve. The worst turn-based mobile games bury their systems in tiny menus. The best ones make every decision feel clear.
My advice: don't grind unless you're actually enjoying the combat. A well-tuned RPG shouldn't require it, and if you find yourself farming the same fight for an hour, that's usually a design flaw, not a challenge.
